The Foundations program at UWM provides all first-year visual art students with a broad background in basic drawing, 2-D and 3-D concepts and the digital arts. It also provides them with an understanding of contemporary art practice and exposure to varoius major options. The foundations year is a time of artistic and personal developement during which students choose their areas of concentration and begin to see themselves becoming practitioners in their field. Each year the Foundations area chooses a theme around which instructors my link assignments and readings. This year’s theme is Ecology/Ecologies, looking both at our relationships with the environment and also ecologies as a study of systems and interconnected parts of a whole. Foundations XI is a result of students creating works in a variety of mediums, some in response to the chosen theme and others in response to other investigations.
