Heap Hill View

Up the road from me is a weird municipal dump site. Its small and has odd parts of water drainage pieces and various heaps of gravel and dirt. There is a place I can climb up to that overlooks the Heap Hill as well as across the State College valley. I love sitting up here painting for the view, but also for the number of characters that drive up to the Heap. Some just park their car and look out at the view. Others take several hours to shovel a small amount of gravel into their truck, while taking cigarette breaks every 5 minutes; relaxing and soaking in the sun. And municipal workers who look up and wonder at the crazy person hiding up in the forest above them painting?

Lemont Church

To me this was one of the first true days of Spring 2013. It was actually warm out (this painting was done in late April) and you could tell that the sun was taking its time in a slow descent. It also made me appreciate how calm and peaceful Lemont, PA is. A few cars, tons of birds, and neighbors taking walks.

It was a windy day in late April when my friend and I pulled off the road, set up our easels and started painting. The wind was so wild, knocking over easels making small twisters, and even sending a brigade of burs into my friend’s hair. But it was sunny and a good day to paint!

Heroes Surround Us: An Exhibition Without Borders

I’m so excited to have been accepted into the Heroes Surround Us exhibition at the John Michael Kholerl Arts Center! Here is a description of the show:

“Professional artists and others from coast to coast submitted portraits on paper that depict an inspiring person in their lives. Participants were invited to draw inspiration from street artists such as Gabriel Specter and Chris Stain who find muses among the people in their communities. Portrait subjects range from pop culture personalities to leaders in their communities to friends and family who are personal heroes. Works will be displayed in the Community Gallery and later wheat-pasted on selected building exteriors throughout Sheboygan. Maps will be available for viewers to take with them and see the works of art in city in the surrounding neighborhoods.”

So for those of you in WI check out this exhibit that runs from May 26th to September 1st! My hero is my mother “Gera”. Below is a little more on the piece:

Single mothers are everywhere in our society. Often they work long ours to provide for their children and their remaining time is dedicated to raising them. Someone with such endurance and empathy is surely a hero. My Hero is my Mother, Gera (short for Geraldine). Despite family rifts and financial troubles she made sure that our basic needs were met. She encouraged us to seek higher education and was there to help along the way in innumerable ways. I can say for sure that she is the reason my sister and I have succeeded in our dreams.
