Rose from the ashes on 2013, June 14th
Rarely do I get rained out while plein air painting. It has only happened a couple times in the dozens of ventures I’ve made. This time I was meeting with the Farmland Preservation Artists (a great group who use their art to defend farmlands). We were meeting at the Mount Nittany Inn in central Pennsylvania looking over Penns Valley as far as we could see in all directions. We saw slivers of mountains deep in the distance, cloud formations floating down the valley almost within touch, and organic grids of farmland. Eventually the clouds coming over Mount Nittany let loose some rain and I had to finish this piece at home.

I’ve just started selling prints in my Etsy Shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/SeanBodley. This is one of my favorite landscapes that I’ve done and the first print to go online. It is inspired by a great musician Skwirl who you can listen to on soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/mr-squirrel/

Several weeks ago I took a trip to Pittsburgh to paint and game test with a friend. The drive up and over the great mountain roads to Pitt were astounding. Such huge swaths of green forest as far as the eye could see. The mountains are epic, but gentle here. We met early in the morning, went down to the river and watched the city; listened to its echoes down and across the river’s silver body.

The central area of Pennsylvania is criss-crossed with power lines. To keep them maintained huge mowers, helicopter choppers, and teams of workers clear thin slices of forest. If you can get to the top of a ridge on one of the power tower lines, then you’re bound to get a remarkable view. I thoroughly enjoyed sketching this in graphite and watercolor crayon with the sun warming and the wind blasting.

A lot of times I prefer painting in overcast light. For me its one of the best ways to observe quietness and relative peacefulness in nature. The soft lighting lends itself to calm and consistency.

Penn State has one of the most beautiful campuses I’ve ever seen. Granted I haven’t seen that many, but this place is a maze of beauty. Its almost unreal. So many varieties of trees, plants, gardens, and architecture. I painted this landscape en plein aire several weeks ago and it was one of the most difficult. Not because of composition or lighting, but because I was struck by a massive allergy reaction to all the wonderful plants. Between strokes I would let off barrages of sneezing. I quickly ran out of tissues and ended up using paint rags for my nose’s generous productivity. Anyways, the think I like about this pieces is the reckless, almost desperate layering of paint and how built up it ended up being.

On the Penn State Campus in State College are some of the most beautiful trees. Not only do they have some of the last Elder American Elms, but a variety of other trees which are unique and stunning. It is one of my favorite places to sit and do tree portraits. This plein aire landscape was done on a beautiful sunny day in late April.

Surrounding Penn State are vast networks for agricultural science fields. You can get lost in campus back roads that go deep into woods. You can find trails where only a 4×4 can make the trek, find herds of animals, heavy machinery, and gridded fields. This is a plein aire painting from within that interesting landscape.
